How it works
How do you add 15 % VAT?
Multiply the amount before VAT by 0.15 to get the VAT, then add it: SAR 1,000 plus SAR 150 VAT is SAR 1,150. Or multiply by 1.15 in one step. Amounts are rounded to the nearest halala.
How do you take VAT out of a total?
Divide the total by 1.15 to get the amount before VAT; the difference is the VAT. A total of SAR 1,150 is SAR 1,000 before VAT and SAR 150 VAT. Taking 15 % off the total gives the wrong answer.
What is the VAT rate in Saudi Arabia?
The standard rate has been 15 % since 1 July 2020. Some supplies are zero-rated or exempt, so check the treatment of what you sell before you invoice.
Questions
Why is taking 15 % off a total wrong?
Because the VAT is 15 % of the amount before VAT, not of the total. On SAR 1,150, 15 % is SAR 172.50, while the VAT is SAR 150.
How is the VAT rounded?
To two decimals, the halala, rounding half up. On an invoice, work out VAT on each line or on the total in the same way every time.
